I know, I know. I've worn this skirt way too much recently. It's just so perfect with just about everything in my closet! If you don't own a pleated black skirt, I suggest you invest in one. They're so comfy and stylish.

a scarf in summer

Wearing scarves in summer was once quite taboo, but there is one way to do it and beat the heat at the same time- wear a scarf as a belt! I've seen a lot of pictures of people using scarves as belts and finally decided to give it a try. Worked quite well with this outfit, I think!

It's been humid and drizzly today, but even with the break from scorching sunlight, it's still sticky and hot. That's summer in the South for you! On rainy days I think the most depressing thing to do is wear neutrals or dark colors- the weather's got that palette covered, so why not bust out the super brights?

Plus this outfit gave me an occasion to wear the new shoes I bought in Paris (on sale to boot, woo!) that are the loveliest shade of royal blue.

I'm still horribly jet lagged (they say it takes 1 day to get over each hour of difference), but I was feeling functional enough to meet my friend for lunch at a little sandwich shop we found nearby. I must say, I'm missing French food already! I woke up craving salads, of all things. I usually detest eating salads since they make me feel like a cow, but let me say that the French know how to make a good salad. 

Thus, in my longing, I decided to wear something I'd bought in Paris- this adorable black pleated skirt. Whilst wandering around near the Latin Quarter, K and I happened upon this small little boutique with affordable vintage-style clothing. We went kind of crazy, trying on just about everything in the store, and ended up buying some wonderful things. In addition to this skirt, I bought a lace dress, which I'll hopefully get a chance to wear soon!

Black and brown (any shade) in an outfit together was something I would never have done a few years ago. Now it's one of my favorite combinations- funny how that works, huh? This skirt is one of my favorites as it goes with just about everything and isn't horribly short either. As a short person I can get away with wearing shorter things than some of my taller friends, but I think I'll always prefer longer skirts. I've often been teased about being too modest. I don't think that's a problem anymore, but on a day to day basis I like to keep covered up! (Weekends are another story, hah!)

I'd like to think this outfit has a hint of sailor-flair to it (exhibit a: stripes. exhibit b: navy and white.) but then anything with blue and white and floral is so very summer. I've had this skirt for a few months now, but was never sure how to wear it, since a lot of shirts don't work with how light and flowy it is. Then, I stumbled upon this lovely tank at Forever 21 and was pleasantly surprised to discover that it worked wonderfully! This is the first time I've tried tying a knot at the front of a shirt, and I'm glad I did, since it's really what made this outfit come together.

It's an absolutely beautiful day today, breezy and not too hot, so it was nice to get some sunshine that wasn't going to cook me alive. Also, it's my dog's birthday! We'll probably take a nice long walk with him this evening and give him a steak to celebrate. I also managed to find a doggie birthday cake, so he's in for quite the surprise!

This outfit reminds me of a kind of retro-boarding-school look. Probably has to do with all the Oxford in it: the button up oxford shirt, the oxford flats...
I like the simplicity of this, and it's quite comfy to boot! The shoes really did serve as the inspiration and pull-it-all-together element of this outfit, I will say. Alas, even with Dr. scholl's gel pads and all, these shoes are still not completely broken in and as a result my feet are more than a bit sore. All in the name of fashion, I suppose!

 I love summer evenings. The sunlight turns perfectly golden, softer than the harshness of summer daylight. The air is still a bit sticky but that's part of the appeal of this season, isn't it? All the bug noises, however, I could do without.

I love colorblocking. Possibly this stems from my love of stripes. Makes sense, huh? In any case, as soon as I found this rusty top I knew I was going to pair it with this skirt. I love when that happens. I switched out the flats for turquoise wedges (seen here and here) when we went out to dinner.

Also new discovery regarding my hair. When it looks gross down (which is more often than not, I'm sorry to say), I have found that taking my bangs (which are awfully long now) and twisting them, then pinning them back makes my face look much less bald when I put it up.

This skirt reminds me of an orange creamsicle with the white linen + orange stripes deal. As today was extremely hot and muggy, I reached for this flowy skirt and paired it with a simple v-neck tee. 

I unfortunately didn't have time to take closeups, but the necklace I'm wearing is one that's very special to me. My grandfather gave it to me two years ago when I was in India. It's two-sided, with a dark grey silver on one side and a silver-gold mix on the other.

Ignoring the ick that is my hair today, I do like this outfit. I love skirts and tanktops in summer- the perfect light outfit combo in my opinion! Also, the blues and neutrals in this outfit let me wear my new bright lipstick (didn't show up too well in the picture, but oh well), appropriately called hot coral by Revlon. It's got awesome staying power and is my new fav shade.

No pretty background today as it's looking awful stormy and as such there's not much sun out. Today was my first day shadowing at the oncology clinic. It was a really interesting experience, and I'm excited to go back and learn more. For the past four years or so, my goal has been to become a doctor. My parents are, but apart from hearing the stories they'd bring home each day, I'd never really been to a clinic to see how things are run. Seeing as I'm set to take the MCAT within the next few years, I figured I needed to take a look at what I'm getting myself into.

I started the day bright and early at 8am. Dr. W gave me a tour around the clinic to start things off (I got to look inside the procedure rooms, chemotherapy area, and radiation therapy areas). Then, the nurse handed the list of patients for the day, and we began to go through charts. I had to sign a confidentiality paper first, of course. Dr. W is a great teacher, and he made sure to explain all the jargon and terms in the charts to me, as well as just generally introduce the patient before we went into the examining room. 

We saw around 10 patients today, but I'll only write about the one woman who really stood out to me.

She was old, but not terribly so, and was only just growing her hair back from chemotherapy. She wore a bright floral printed shirt, big colorful earrings, and a pair of tan wedges. She was all smiles, giving Dr. W a hug before he sat down and began to talk about her treatment. 

What made this woman special, was this: I soon found out that she had been through three surgeries and had been diagnosed with three cancers, and having undergone two radiation treatments already, was set to do one more to completely (and finally) get rid of her cancer. Also, she'd broken her ankle just a few months back (and was back to wearing wedges!). All this, and she was so happy! Nothing sad or mournful about her at all. She was truly inspiring.

I hadn't planned to do anything other than laze around in bed today, but one of my friends asked if I'd like to get lunch with her, and I am a sucker for eating out. It's a smidge humid and quite hot today/all week/summer in the south in general, so I opted for this cotton printed tank top, cotton skirt, and wedges.
